About the Harkers Island Bridge
In 2023, NCDOT opened a new high-rise bridge to Harkers Island, replacing the swing bridge that had served the island from 1969 to 2023. If anyone from Harkers Island still tells you they're late because they got stuck at the bridge, they were just on island time.
There's a popular beach on the island side next to the old bridge terminal. On the mainland side, the old bridge has been reborn as a park and fishing pier, an easy place to soak a bait over structure the old roadbed left behind. Check the tide tables above to time the moving water.
